Manager's Meeting @ FLO 5/3/17

In Attendance: John, Shirley, Drew, LeRoy, Cedric, Nathan, Maggie, Tula, Djuina, and Virginia (host).

We started off with a tour of Flores, showcasing some of their detailed displays and artwork. Afterwards, Virginia led us on a scavenger hunt in teams of two, which Drew and LeRoy won!

We started the book discussion but Djuina paused it to do a quick introduction around the table so that John, the new manager of Collier, could get to know each of us.

BOOK DISCUSSION:

Nathan stated, "a lot of people have a misconception of what a leader is". When you offer solutions instead of complaining you can show leadership without the title.

Virginia added, "Before you can lead, you must first master yourself".

Shirley stated that "as a leader, you should be able to call out something that is wrong" ... to keep it from escalating.

Nathan asked if any us have every though of ourselves as leaders prior to being a manager?
-Maggie stated that she pushed backed when she was offered the manager position, because she wanted to stay a children's librarian.

Djuina mentioned that in the HEAR reviews, with the exception of attendance, the other areas of review can reflect back on you as their manager.

Virginia added to that stating that she likes to retrain her staff even on the simplest tasks (e.g. library apps, bookdrop, closing procedures, etc)

Cedric stated that those not managers can even be leaders, like executive assistants, because they can see the bigger picture.

Remember that genuine leadership is leaving a legacy not building resume skills.

OPEN DISCUSSION:

Virginia had each of draw an open-ended question from a bucket and finish it out, which would tell others more about our personalities or interests.

Nathan asked about calling CPS if we see something. Djuina replied with yes, and gave an example about her experience at COL when a young child was seen being abused by an adult.

Djuina has asked for all the managers to keep in mind that Johnson will need help with vacation coverage; Iona is maxed out and needs to take vacation time, but this will make Johnson short-handed. If you can help out, let Djuina and LeRoy know.

Please remember the 3-part telephone greeting. Staff have been forgetting this, especially if they see the call has been coming from another location or even Djuina's cell. Do NOT assume it is a staff member! Say the statement, because you never know who is on the other line.

Be on the lookout for a man with a white cap/hat and a pink bag. Virginia had just had him suspended from FLO. It took the police a while to get him to leave the library, he was not being cooperative and he was verbally abusive.

This is a reminder about the ON-CALL investigator. Remember to call him if you have to re-enter the library after locking up or if you mis-type your number by mistake. Just call him to let him know who you are and what is going on, just in case a silent alarm has been tripped.

Djuina wanted the managers to know that you can email the meeting room application to a customer or fax it to them; but use your google email address that you use to access your meeting room calendar. You can also use the email address that is designated to your location, this email address was given out at the last manager's meeting. 3initials.library@houstontx.gov (ex: man.library@houstontx.gov). Do not use your work email address, you may be out of town when they send in a request; this way you and any of your staff can access the email.

Next meeting will be @ Collier on June 7th.

There will be no meeting in July.

The August meeting will be on the 9th @ Mancuso.
